When Motherhood Gets Hard: Give Yourself Grace, Mama
Because even the strongest mothers need somewhere soft to land….
It's been a while since I've shared my heart here. My last blog post was in 2024, and life has continued to remind me why I began LilyGrace Doula Care.
Motherhood is beautiful, sacred, and transformative. But it can also be exhausting, lonely, and overwhelming.
We celebrate the beautiful moments, but what about the mothers who cry behind closed doors? The ones navigating unexpected challenges, questioning their decisions, or simply trying to hold everything together?
Loving your children deeply doesn't mean motherhood will always be easy. And struggling doesn't mean you're failing.
The Journey I Never Expected
When I became a mother at 23, I had dreams of what motherhood would look like. Instead, my journey began with an emergency cesarean birth and emotions I didn't fully understand.
Looking back, I recognize that I experienced symptoms consistent with postpartum depression and anxiety. But at the time, I simply knew I had a baby who needed me, so I kept going.
Over the years, single motherhood brought challenges I never anticipated. There were moments of uncertainty, exhaustion, and questions about whether I was doing enough.
Those experiences eventually became part of the inspiration behind my journey into birth work and the personal story I've been writing, The Doula God Built.
I've learned that being a good mother doesn't mean having all the answers. Sometimes it means having the courage to ask for help.
Give Yourself Grace, Mama
As mothers, we often extend endless patience and compassion to our children while being incredibly hard on ourselves.
We replay our mistakes, question our decisions, and carry guilt that doesn't serve us.
But here's your reminder:
You are allowed to have difficult days. You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to feel overwhelmed. And you are allowed to be a whole person outside of motherhood.
Your needs, dreams, happiness, and mental health matter, too.
You Were Never Meant to Do This Alone
There's a reason we say it takes a village to raise a child. I believe it also takes a village to support the mother raising that child.
Whether your village includes family, friends, doulas, your faith community, or mental health professionals, surround yourself with people who allow you to be human.
And please, don't hesitate to seek professional mental health support when you need it.
As a woman of faith, I believe in the power of prayer. I also believe God has equipped mental health professionals with the knowledge and compassion to help us heal.
Seeking therapy isn't a sign of weakness or a lack of faith. It's an act of courage and self-love.
Keep Growing. Keep Healing. Keep Blooming.
One of the most meaningful lessons motherhood has taught me is that our difficult seasons don't have to define our entire story.
Sometimes, the very experiences that challenge us become the foundation of our greatest purpose.
At LilyGrace Doula Care, lilies represent hope, renewal, and the beautiful process of blooming.
And just like flowers, we all grow through different seasons.
Some seasons are full of sunshine. Others require patience, nurturing, and a little extra care.
You don't have to bloom on anyone else's timeline.
To the mother who's thriving, I'm celebrating you.
To the mother who's struggling, I'm holding space for you.
To the mother who's healing, starting over, or navigating a journey she never expected, I see you.
Please don't give up on yourself.
Give yourself grace. Lean on your village. Ask for help. And remember that taking care of yourself is part of taking care of your family.
You can be an incredible mother and still need support.
With love, faith, and grace,
Taylor Jefferson
